At Raytheon, the I&T provides the means for establishing, evaluating, and maintaining quality in software and associated documentation for total system development, throughout the system life cycle.
The I&T is directed toward assessing system integrity, ensuring proper Implementation of system functionality, ensuring the operational readiness of the system, and facility end-to-end testing via creation of an Verification and Validation (V&V) plan (VVP) tailored to the particular project (such as Spitzer). The VVP establishes overall guidelines and recommended directions for the system V&V, defines what methodologies and approaches will be used, identifies resources available to conduct the effort, and provides detail methodologies defining how specific task activities will be accomplished. The I&T, via the System Integration and Test Plan (SITP) further elaborates the testing portion of the V&V effort. The V&V testing is a mainstream activity, performed in-line with the development effort that encompasses test and integration of all principal components, and verification and validation of the end-to-end operation of the resultant system.
As part of the software development process (such as MS2/MONTE), the I&T performs S/W requirement analysis for testability, develops test specifications appropriately tailored to the specific system, participates in integration of subsystems into a system, performs variety of tests, tracks defects and their fixes, and generates test logs and test reports under Configuration Management (CM).
